Registered Counsellors have to complete the following training:
Either a four year BPsych degree (including 6 months practicum)
a three year B degree with Psychology major, PLUS BPsych Equivalence (1 to 2 years) which includes a 6 months practicum.
In addition to the above, Registered Counsellors have to pass the board exam of the Professional Board of Psychology in order to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
This amounts to five years of training. Registered Counsellors also have to comply with the same Continued Professional Development standards as Psychologists, in order to maintain their registration with the Professional Board of Psychology.
